COSCO SHIPPING Special Transport Successfully Delivers 12.5GWh Saudi Arabia Energy Storage Project

2025-09-04

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – On August 19th, with the final energy storage unit safely unloaded from the vessel "DA ZI YUN" at the Port of Jeddah, COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers Co., Ltd. announced the successful completion of its transportation contract for a major energy storage project in Saudi Arabia.

Over a span of four months and across 13 separate voyages, the company transported a total of 2,386 containerized energy storage units. These units, each weighing 45 tons, amount to a massive total capacity of 12.5 GWh (gigawatt-hours), setting a new record for the single-project export volume of new energy equipment from China.

The cargo consisted of 20-foot container-style energy storage units classified as UN 3536, a Category 9 hazardous material. The significant weight of each unit, far exceeding standard container parameters, posed considerable safety and logistical challenges.

To address the high value, heavy weight, and complex hazardous nature of the cargo, COSCO SHIPPING Special Transport's Pan-European division assembled a dedicated project team. Collaborating with the company's cargo technology department, global sales center, and various regional offices, the team developed a specialized solution. This included custom-designed multi-point support steel plates and tailor-made lashing plans specifically engineered for the vessel's hold structure.

Throughout the four-month transportation period, the company's port captains and technical personnel remained on-site during all loading operations. Their constant supervision ensured that all 2,386 units complied 100% with maritime regulations for dangerous goods, leading to a flawless execution with zero incidents.

The successful journey of these Chinese-manufactured energy storage units, covering over 8,000 nautical miles from ports in the East to their final destination on the Red Sea, underscores COSCO SHIPPING Special Transport's expertise and service capabilities in handling oversized and hazardous cargo across multiple voyages.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing its core capabilities in specialized transport, aiming to contribute "China's shipping power" to the global energy transition and support a sustainable, high-quality green future.
